PATEA FIRE BRIGADE
ACTIVITIES OF PAST YEAR. The annual meeting of the Patea Volunteer Eire Brigade was held on Tuesday evening, the Mayor of Patea (Mr F. Ramsottom) presiding. * The report stated that the membership continued at full strength. Hydrantman C. Carey, Secretary Is. R. Coad and Foreman W. Sedgman attended all of the 37 musters. There had been five calls during the year and three wet practices. No serious fires had occurred. Service honours had been gained by Branchman E. Nielson, gold star, 27 years ’service; R. Willis, silver bar, 19 years’ service; A. Carey, silver bar, 17 years’ service; W. Willis, silver | bar, 9 years’ service; M. Macken, serI vice medal, five years’ service; N;. Coad, certificate, three years’ service; | F. Standford, certificate, three years’ 1 service; M. Fitzwater, certificate, three years’ service; M. Carey, certificate, three years’ service. Competitions resulted as follows: First shield, F. Stanford 1. W. Millan j 2; second shield, D. Ansley 1, W. i Millan 2; third shield (Mr H. Quickenden’s trophy), W. Willis 1, O. Carey 2; Gilberd Memorial, C. Carey 1, D. Ansley 2; Mr A. ,T. Cooper’s trophy, F. Stanford 1, N. Coad 2; Christensen Shield. W. Millan 1. The brigade had been represented at the Taranaki demonstrations, when the members acquitted themselves well. Hydrantmna C. H. Carey gained third place in the Gilbert Memorial competition. The 25 years’ gold star had been l awarded Fireman C. Adams at a complimentary social held in his honour on May 4. Gold stars were held by Messrs Spooner (33 years), Adams (26), M. Carey (33), Nielsen (27), C. Adams (25). The brigade’s thanks were due to the mayor, council and borough staff and ladies for assistance, to donors of trophies and to the Press. The brig-' ade’s plant was in first-class order. < The election resulted: Captain, F. Fitzwater; lieutenant, G. Willis; secretary, N. Goad; foreman No. I. C. H. Carey; foreman Nog 2. W. Willis; branehmen, 0. Macken and F;. Nielson. A smoke concert followed, during which a toast list was honoured. i
