CARDIFF TRIAL OPENED. INTERRUPTION BY RAIN. (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph Copyright.) LONDON, July 27. The cricket test trial at Cardiff was interrupted by rain. This is the first representative match ever played in Wales. There has been some criticism in this connecetion as the wicket is unlikely to provide even a remote resemblance to Australian conditions. Larwood found his foothold insecure, but with the total at 12 he dismissed Pataudi. This was the Indian’s first, trial as Sutcliffe’s partner. The scores are: ENGLAND. First Innings. Sutcliffe, st. Cromb, tli© New Zealander, approached Jupp (Northamptonshire) and Dick Tyldesley (Lancashire) and the South African Morkel. It is reported that, the New Zealander, W. E. Merritt, who is now playing for Risliton, took a 'prominent part in the negotiations. Cromb was offered an engagement m Lancashire League cricket when lie was in England last year with the New Zealand team. He did not accept on account of the terms of the agreement with the New Zealand Cricket Council. Merritt, however, subsequently accepted an engagement, and is now playing for Risliton.
