TURUTURU SCHOOL

SOCIAL AND DANCE. ASSEMBLY AT RACECOURSE. By the courtesy of - the Egmont Racing Club the Turuturu School Committee last evening held a most successful social and dance in the stewards’ dining room at the Haw era, racecourse on Wailii Road. Over 150 guests attended and for those who did not - dance, cards* were played in an adjoining room furnished ~as a lounge. Mr. R. Morrissey undertook the duties qf master of ceremonies and the proceedings ivent with g merry swing until the early hours of this morning. He addressed the assembly at one stage and mentioned that the social was the first of a series and the proceeds would be devoted to assist the school and later to hold a picnic. Thanks were extended to the following artists who contributed items: Miss H. Evans and Mr W. A. Schmidt (recitations), Mesdames A. Morse and H. J. Webber and Misses A. Whyte, J. O’Brieii and J. Henson (songs). (Mrs. Morse and Mr. R, Page contributed a vocal duet and pianoforte acompaniments were .played by Mrs. A. J. Corrigan and Miss *G. Chadwick. Community singing was a popular feature of the evening’s entertainment. Mr. Morrissey also thanked . the Elgmont Racing Club through the president, Mr. J. Gray, who was- in attendance, for the use of the buildings.

Old time and modern dances were included on the programme and the music was provided bv Messrs. Pickering, McDonald anil Prime. The grand march at the commencement of the proceedings was led by Mr. C. Bowman (chairman of the school committee) and Mrs. Bowman. Several competitions were conducted and prizes donated by (Mrs. Morse for a waltzing-competition were won by Mr. and Mrs. W. • P'rime.

An abundance of supper was- provided by the ladies of the district and served under the supervision of Mesdames Morse and Pine. On account of tlie extraordinary surplus it was decided that the large cakes he donated to necessitous families.
