BRITISH TEAM IN AUSTRALIA. IMPRESSIVE OPENING- GAME. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph Copyright.) SYDNEY, May 29. The British Rugby League team opened their tour on .the Sydney cricket ground yesterday against a Metropolitan side. They completely outclassed the local players on a wet, muddy ground and in the presence of 42,500. The final scores were: England 29, Metropolitan 5. Fourteen penalties were awarded against the Englishmen in the first half and one against Metropolitan. J. Feetham, a visiting forward, was sent off the field. The Metropolitan players included a mixture of young players and veterans, also three Kangaroos—Mahar, ■McMillan and Brogan. ( Eor England Sullivan (the captain) kicked four goals, Foothani and Brogden each scored two tries and White, Smith and Hudson each one try. For Metropolitan O’Connor scored one. try and Williams kicked a goal. “The Sun” says tiio Englishmen are a most formidable combination. The majority of the penalties against them were contraventions of the Australian rides, hut not of the English rules, whereupon a common understanding should be reached.

Brogden, wing three-quarter for the visitors, is described as a wonder, with tremendous speed. He pierced the defence as if it was made of paper. The itinerary comprises 18 matches, including three Tests—June 6 at Sydney, June IS at Brisbane, and July 16 at Sydney. The last match is on July 20 at Wagga, and the team then leaves for its tour of New Zealand.
