UNEMPLOYMENT COMMITTEE. More acute distress among the unemployed of Patea led to a meeting of the Unemployment Committee last Monday night, the Mayor (Mr. F. Rasbottom) presiding. Others present were Messrs Row (County Council). Christensen (Hal-hour Board), Hemingway (Domain Board), Green (postmaster), Austin (secretary) and Carradus, Moore Campbell and Young (unemployed representatives). Boot repairs of the unemployed was the first question to be considered, Mr. Moore bringing the matter forward with the suggestion that one of the unemploved, a boot-repairer, he given the work and supplied with the necessary material and tools. Accommodation and materials were then discussed, it being agreed that an appeal for funds for the purchase of the materials would be required.
The second question brought forward was that the men working on the county jobs be allowed to ston work half-an-hour earlier, taking only half a hour at mid-day. instead of an hour. Mr. Row- stated that he was agreeable to this in the winter months, but not in the summer when the men would require the full hour’s rest. When it was suggested that an appeal for clothing and vegetables be made, it was stated that there was no organisation for the distribution of these. Finally, the Mayor and Mr. Hemingway were appointed a committee to wait on the Women’s Institute to inquire whether they would be willing to undertake this distribution. Appreciation of the attendance of the the Unemployment Committee with the representatives of the unemployed, was expressed by Mr. Moore before the meeting was concludd. He stated that the men were now more satisfied with representatives on the committee. LADIES’ GOLF CLUB. The Coronation Medal and Aotea Cup rounds that were to have been played by the Patea Ladies’ Golf Club members on Wednesday, had to be postponed on account of the weather. As this round had to be played throughout New Zealand on the last week in May. Mrs. Harris reduced her handicap during the week on a card of 96, making her handicap 19. PERSONAL. Mr. C. R. IJoneyfield left last Tues day for Wellington, where he will attend the Anglican Synod. Mr. E. S. Baker has been appointed to the position of head-teacher at Ivakamarea School, and will commence his duties on June 1. Mrs. and Miss Ramsbottom have returned from a holiday spent in Auckland.
