HAWERA PUBLIC LIBRARY.
(To- the Editor.)
Sir, —It may interest . the library committee to know that there is a strong undercurrent of dissatisfaction with conditions obtaining in connection with the public library. Membership fee of £1 per annum used to entitle one to three ordinary and one juvenile books. We now have a juvenile subscription of 2s—a, lO per cent, increase ill times when a 2-5 per cent, cut on the £1 would be more in line with salary reductions. If an annual subscription of os per book per indit idual were instituted for single men and women, and a family subscription oi 15s entitled each member of a family (adult or juvenile) to one book, I feel sure there would be a very great increase in subscribers and that the reductions would be more than offset thereby. It is a fact, toil, that recent books are hardly ever obtainable unless reserved by paying a fee of 3d—surely Id to cover cost of postcard or telephone call should he enough to give a reserve ot say one clay. Will our library committee call a public meeting of those interested for the consideration of these and any other suggestions, and will any others who feel as L do write in support?—l am, etc., a.h.l.
