The May meeting of the South Canterbury Jockey Club was held to-day ' on the Washdvke course, which was in excellent order. There was a good attendance. Results: LEVELS HURDLES. Of £IOO. OTAKI CANDIDATES. (By “Limited.”) Trainers on the It awe r a course this morning were lucky in getting training operations through before heavy rain set in. The Otaki engaged horse® were galloped fast, the trial grass track being used and providing fair going. Kissless and Alt. Shannon were companions over seven furlongs. Kissless has retained her form and had no difficulty, although having a big advantage" in the weight, in beating Mt. Shannon by several lengths in L3pV O. Cox’s representative for Otaki, Davistock, went from tlie six-furlong peg, being picked up by Peschiero at the five. The pair ran home from there in I.GJ, finishing together. Orby’s Choice got a flying start advantage over March Alone, opening up a break that tlie latter could not breach and ran tlie distance in 1.6. Bon Eve (Conway), who should have an excellent chance of winning a hurdle race, went a round of the schooling hurdles with Calamine (Grind lay). Although Calamine jumped the better, Bon Eve finished in front in a capital round. W. Pine worked the youngsters Royal Papa and Divolo, and Peter Jackson, Gaiue Carrington and Splutter, among others, did useful work. La Crown and Tenteall are being spelled. . The Hawera contingent arrived saiely at Ellerslic on Friday morning m good shape. Trainers J. Fryer and J. Brown lelt by car early this morning to attend to their charges. There has been much speculation as to the Northern plans for Mr. J. Corry’s horses Make Up and Landmark. Latest reports are that Make Up will start in both Hurdles and Steeples and D. O’Connor will ride him in both. Landmark may be reserved for the Steeples as A. Jenkins has been engaged to ride linn in that l‘clC6. , * i tT>i On Thursday morning Make Up schooled specially well over a round of the Great Northern Steeplechase comse r and looks sure to start favourite in that event. , ~ 1 Maurice McCarten, who recently un- ; derwent an operation at Sydney and 1 afterwards contracted pneumonia, is ‘ reported to be making a. steady recovery; but will he out of the saddle for many weeks yet..
