CAMPAIGN WARMING UP
NEW SOUTH WALES ELECTION CANDIDATES TREATED ROUGHLY GRITIGISM OF EX-PREMIER SPEECH RAISES INDIGNATION (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph t opyright.) SYDNEY, May 27. The election campaign is warming up. . A Federal Labour candidate after leaving a, meeting at Glebe was bespattered. with, tomatoes by Lang supporters. A Communist candidate, Mr L. Sharkey, while addressing factory workers in Mr Lang’s electorate, Auburn, was knocked off bis- perch, carried bodily to an adjoining stagnant creek and thrown in. Mr Sharkey’s comrades disappeared before the angry crowd of Langites could catch them. Mr Lang’s references to the. courts during his speech last night have raised a storm of indignation. Leading lawyers describe his remarks a* infamous and cowardly. “No Communist howling for the. overthrow of social order over s.aid anything worse about the King and law,” says the “Herald.” “Mr Lang has become a political leper in this count it and desires to contaminate the whole community with his loathsome political disease. His debenture issue for £21,000,000 would ibe both unconstitutional and impracticable. The “World” newspaper, organ of Federal Labour, describes the State currency proposal put forward by Mr Lang as the “most wicked, pharisaical trick ever suggested for the hoodwinking of the starving. It amounts to paper inflation, because the backing, apart from being hypothetical, would not amount to anything like £7,000,000 per year for three years from the shrinking taxable field. Moreover, Mr Lang has no power over the currency issue; therefore his- proposal is illegal. Good money would leave this State as faist as the banks could make transfers, and the people would be left with bundles of bonds which nobody would negotiate.”
REQUEST TO RECALL GOVERNOR DISCUSSION IN THE COMMONS LONDON, May 26. In the House of Commons Mr Stanley Baldwin, replying to Mr J. Maxton’s request for an opportunity to discuss his demand for the recall of Sir Philip 'Game owing to the latter’s dismissal of Mr Lang, said : ‘‘l understood that we have no jurisdiction in the matter. While I am mailing inquiries there will be an election in New South Wales which will decided the question.” (Ministerial cheers and laughter.) Mir Maxton (Labour) : “If the election results return Mr Lang will the Government recall Sir Philip Game?” The Speaker: “That is hypothetical.”
Mr Baldwin promised to investigate the jurisdiction point.
