VIOLENT EARTHQUAKE

RECORD AT WELLINGTON. PROBABLY NEAR KERMADECS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, May 27. At 3.42 this morning the seismographs at the Dominion Observatory began recording a big earthquake. Preliminary tremors lasted for two minutes 15 seconds. Then violent oscillations were recorded for about three hours. A preliminary calculation, indicates the direction as north-north-east •of New Zealand, probably on the edge of the deep near the Kermadecs.
