LABOUR ON FARMS

ERADICATION OF WEEDS

RELIEF WORK CONDITIONS. Whereas circulars received by the Ha.wera. Unemployed Relief Committee and the local Government certifying ■officer (Mr. J. S. Fletcher) laid down quite definitelv that farmers applying for labour would be required to pay a portion of the costs, a circular over the name of the Minister of Agriculture issued on May 2- to all branches of the Farmers’ Union and all co-operative dairy companies conveys a distinct intimation that farmers) could obtain the services of registered unemployed under the No. 5 scheme of relief for the eradication of noxious weeds, free of all cost to themselves. The conflicting nature of the circulars led to enquiries being made in Wellington and on Thursday Mr. Fletcher received definite instruction which .should clarify the whole position. It is. the board’s instruction that free labour must not 'he supplied to farmers in cases where the applicant has the abilitv to provide the labour himself or make' a, contribution towards the wages costs'of the relief workers. “The eirnlar is definitely clear,” stated Mr. Fletcher, in an interview with a “Haworn- star” reporter this morning, “that where the farmer is in a position to make a contribution towards the wages cost-si he is required to do so and, in addition, he is expected to provide work for the rest of the week at his own expense.” ' similar instruction has been received by the Ha.wera Unemployed Relief Committee.
