DEMAND FOR RETALIATION. (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph Copyright-1 OTTAWA, May 25. The United States tariff increases on lumber and copper, practically creating an embargo, are chawing widespread demands for retaliation. In British Columbia it is stated that half the mills and the, Britannia mines copper plant, the largest in the Empire, would have to close.

The Prime Minister (Mr. R, B. Bennett), answering demands for retaliation in the House of Commons, stated that he doubted if the new duties would pass Congress or the President’s veto.

Thej House will be prorogued tomorrow.
