“GROSSLY EXAGGERATED”
AUCKLAND RIOT FILMS ACCOMPANYING COMMENT AUCKLAND, May 21. Allegations that the descriptive comment accompanying talking picture news-reels, showing scenes of the riots in Auckland, were grossly exaggerated were made by Mr A. G. Brown at a meeting of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce council. He considered the time was ripe for a Government censorship in such matters.
“Motion pictures form a valuable medium of publicity,” Mr Brown said, “but the scenes of the Auckland riots, if they are shown outside this country, will be anything but valuable publicity. The actual scenes are not exaggerated, but the accompanying comment most certainly is. In one scene, the wrecked front of a jeweller’s shop is shown and the announcer says that goods worth £3OOOI were taken from the window. The damage and losses are exaggerated all along the line.”
It was decided to bring the matter under the notice of the Minister of Internal Affairs.—“ Dominion” Sendee.
