MANAWATU COMPETITIONS
SOUTH TARANAKI SUCCESSES.
Competitors from South Taranaki at the Palmerston North Musical and Elocutionary Competitions continue to score successes and at the sessions on Thursday and Friday secured several first and second prizes and recalls. The list following those already reported is as follows: —
Violin solo, under 18. —Louis Fox 1, Margaret Fox 2. Operatic solo, ladies. —Miss Jean McGlashan, “My Heart is Weary” (Hawera), 171, 1. Action recitation, under 14 (own selection). —Junne Goodwin (Hawera), v.h.c. A class of 36 competed. Girls’ recitation, under 12. —Pixie Kent (Hawera) 2. Edna Gane (Hawera), commended. A class of over thirty. Ballet. Miss Margaret Stock's pupils, 2. Contralto solo.—“A Russian Lament,” Miss Jean McGlashan (Hawera) 1.
Ladies’ national song (own selection). —Miss Marion Hamerton, '“Ye Banks and Braes” (Patea) 1. Piano solo, under 18.—“Valse” (Chopin), Joan Bolger (Taranaki) 1. The judge commented favourably on the work of the winner, stating that she was eligible for a younger class, but had elected to compete in more advanced company. Character recital, under 16. —Junne Goodwin, “Fauntleroy,” Nancy Turnbull, “Comedy and Tragedy,” v.h.c. Recital with musical accompaniment, under 16. —Pixie Kent (Hawera), “Breff, ” 1; Edna Ganc (Hawera), “Billie Boy,” and Ivena Jothan (Hastings), “T.ouchin’ Fings,” equal, 2. Impromptu speech, open.—Mr W. J. Hall (Stratford), 84 points, 1. Character Sketch, gentlemen (own selection), Mr W. W. Thomas; “Scrooge” (Hawera), 90 points) 1. In the character duo, over 12, Misses Junne Goodwin and Audrey McLaren (“The Swaggers.”.), Joan Thomas and Trevor Hunter (“The Skaters”) and Junne Goodwin and Joan Thomas (“Dick Whittington and His Cat”) were competitors and wrnre commended for their work.
Mr H. C. A. Fox, of Hawera, who judged the- brass instrumental numbers, said the performers had been good. He congratulated the society upon including the section in its programme, and stressed the value of the brass instruments in an orchestra, adding that the section was worthy of every encouragement.

The judge of elocution (Mr Warwick) wais very eulogistic in his comments on the work of the young competitors in the tost recitation and musical monologue under 16. In the musiea.l monologue there were 33 competing and no less than IS gained highly commended honours, the judge adding that anyone of these was worthy of a place in a competition and that it was one of the most pleasing classes lie had had. to iudge. The wanner, Pixie Kent, scored 99 point's out of a possible 120 and among the highly commended were the following from Hawera.: Nancy TurnWill, Robin Holloway and Junne Goodwin.
