An essay competition intended to | encourage the study of native bud lifei bv secondary school pupils has been arranged bv the Auckland Zoological Society. The subject of the essay is “Personal Observations of the Habits of Native Birds,” and each must be accompanied by a certificate that it isthe writer’s unaided work. Two prizes of a guinea and two of half a guinea have been provided through the generositv of one of the society’s vicepresidents, for boys and girls over and under 16 years respectively. Particulars of the competition have been sent to the principals of the schools concerned. A candle made in memory of 'Caruso will last 18 centuries. Standing l'6ft high it is burned for one day each year in a little chapel at his birthplace near Naples,' in Italy.
