'HIS -TAIL AND DUST,

COMMENT BY HUMORIST,

VANCOUVER, March 21

Mr Will Rogers, popular humorist, has a laughable paragraph about Phar Lap. “The name sounds like a mouthwash,” he writes, “hut he runs like a racehorse. All that the American horses saw of him was his tail and his dust. “This racehorse makes a sucker out of the United States, and with England holding the motor, aeroplane and foot racing records, there is only one thing in which Uncle 'Sam excels. Our international bankers have lent more of other people’s money to foreign countries on iess security than ever was lent before even on security.”

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By “Maecenas.”)

The Avondale Club will open its autumn meeting iiext Saturday. It coneludes on the Wednesday following. *****

The Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club holds the first of its autumn meetings on Saturday. A week later this club will hold a second meeting. Two meetings so close is an innovation for the Dominion. The Hawke’s Bay Jockej Club is hopeful that the increased attendance Usually found when race meetings are held on Saturday will allow the club to clear expenses. * * * ; i. * *

prior to the running of the North Island' Challenge Stakes at the recent meeting of the Wellington Pacing Club Dady Quex was held in high esteem for her Easter Handicap engagement, but she failed so badly at the end : of the seven furlongs at Trentham that there appeared only a very remote chance that the Taranaki mare would run out the big mile at Ellershe last Saturday. Like many other important racing feats Saturday’s Easter Handicap created a surprise, as the brown mare from New Plymouth beat all save the southerner, Great Star. This performance on the part of Lad} Quex would suggest that the hal'd race under 9.5 on the opening day of the Wellington meeting temporarily gave her a set back, lienee her failure m the North Island Chalenge Stakes. * . * * * *

While Peter Jackson ran fair races as a two-year-old and this season as a three-year-old has performed most consistently, it certainly looks as if liis half-brother Game Carrington will prove even a better performer. The latter’s performances as a two-year-okj are really good and considering that he is not a:s well seasoned as some, of his opponents his success over a seven-furlong journey, accomplished when he won the Champagne Stakes at Ellerslie last Saturday stamps Gaine Carrington as a great prospect for next season’s Derby. He certainly has raced in a- manner suggestive of a future stayer. * * * * *

The success of Gold Dawn in last Saturday’s Manchester Handicap, run at Eeilding over a ten-furlong course, proves clearly that much valuable time has been lost through not trying this mare over middle distances earlier in her career. Her sister, B.riglit Glow, was a particularly good male over a middle distance and as she raced in the same interests up till last season it is possible that liad Gold Dawn carried other colours, she may have won distinction earlier in races over middle' distances. *’f*' *- * *

As Gaine Carrington and Inflation outstayed Mklinette in last Saturday’s Champagne Stakes it must be assumed that Midinette, like many others' on her dam’s side, is more brilfant than solid Por some unaccountable reason which' certainly appears false economy Mklinette was not nominated for the All-Aged Stakes to be run at ■Avondale in a. few days over a six furlong course. Mr. Currie lias tlie disappointing Pomp engaged in the event.

While Middle March lias proved himself an exceptionally solid stayer by winning both St'. Leger runs this year, it certainly looks as if admirers of Ammon Ka must admit that the son of Limond is more brilliant and \< ss a stayer than his rival. AH must admit that Ammon Ra is really good up to, say, ten furlongs, and, in not being able to beat'tlie best over very long courses, he is proving no exception to the rule, for one rarely sees a performer ’ of Amnion Ra’s speed prove of the same class Over long courses. * * * * *

While Ammon Ra failed to beat Middle March in last Saturday’s Australian Jockey Club’s St. Leger, New Zealand bred horses did not fail altogether at the important llandwick meeting as Night March beat all his opponents at weiglit-for-age over the mile and a-half of the Autumn Stakes. Indeed, this important race was a great triumph for New Zea-land-bred horses, as all first four- were bred in the Dominion. This feat must be almost 1 unparalleled if based on percentage basis. * * * * *

When King’s Archer won the Stratford Clip last New Year’s Day he gave an impressive display and looked a likely winner of important handicaps scheduled to be run early in the new year. While King’s Archer ran fair races in the Waikato his form was not up to the standard of his Taranaki efforts. Oil Saturday last this gelding revealed his true form to beat a good class lot at Ellerslie. * ■* * * *

Dor several weeks past Ivorokio has been troubled with' a bad knee and in consequence has done little work'. Recently she had a race at Bulls and this worked some improvement in her condition. Korokio displayed improved form at Feilding, and it is only a matter of her remaining sound and she will secure some prize money • before she goes into winter quarters. * * » * *

. King Colossus was a useful youngster last season, and as a three-year-old lias run some fair races this season. He is in the private sale list, and at the recent meeting at Trenthani was priced on behalf of an Australian sportsman. A thousand guineas was the' price put oii King Colossus and that stopped any business. *

In the Pacific Handicap, run over a six<-furlong journey at the recent meeting of the Wellington Racing Club, Midinette (8.7) never looked like getting beaten and eventually won very easily from Gaine Carrington (8.8). As the latter was well fancied from the right quarter little excuse could be offered for his defeat. Possibly the fact that Gaine Carrington’s rider tried to go with Midinette over the early stages helped to tire the Egmonttraiiied youngster. On the form of the race it pointed to Midinette proving very hard to beat at Ellerslie last Saturday, even though the Champagne Stakes was a furlong further. However, Midinette failed to enhance her reputation, while Gaine Carrington improved on Trenthani form to win like a good two-year-old. * v *• * •* * "

In practically all past years one or another two-year-old has proved itself by performances to he classed the best of the year. Not so this season, as each" successive classical race in which, two-vear-olds competed has disclosed a fresh winner that challenges the rights to be named the season’s champion. Inflation, La Moderne, Tea Trader, Closing Time, Head Lady, Midinette. Silver Ring and Gaine Carrington all have earned distinction in classical or weight-for-age races run this season and the issue is still open as to which has the right to be called the season’s best. From now on Gaine Carrington may assert his right, but it is no certainty that the Egniont-trained two-year-old will win over a six-furlong course.
