DOMINION LABOUR PARTY
SUSPENDED MEMBERS PRAISED
SHORTER WORK-DAY WANTED
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, March 29. Mr W. . Jordan, M.P. for Mauukau, was elected to-day the national president of the New Zealand Labour Party, which is holding its sixteenth annual conference at Wellington. Mr W. Atkinson was appointed vice-president and Mr J. T. Thorn national secretary.
Mr H. E. Holland presented the report of the Parliamentary Labour Party which reviewed the work of the various sessions and outlined its attitude toward each of the measures introduced. Discussing the future, Mr Holland said that when the House resumed the Labour Party would be called upon to make another sustained tight against further wage and salary reductions and attacks on social services and various classes of pensions. The following motions were passed: "This conference congratulates Mr P. Fraser, M.P., and Mr J. A. Dee, M.P., on the stand taken by them under circumstances which resulted in their suspension/’ "This conference places on record its high appreciation of the efforts of the Labour Party’s Parliamentary representatives in their magnificent and strenuous fight against the destructive, hopeless and class legislation of the Coalition Government.”
"This conference approves of a shorter working day or week as being an effective .method of dealing with unemployment.”
The conference will be continued to morrow.
