NEW GENERAL MANAGER
The new general manager of New Zealand Railways, Mr. l\ G. Roussell. was secretary of the precious Railways Board, and lie became genu al .superintendent of transportation when it was replaced by the system of control which has been again changed by the appointment of the present board. He joined the Railways Department in 1893, and for 12 years lie occupied various positions in the Auckland and Wanganui districts. Later lie filled the positions of statiomnaster at Tur.akina, Otahuhu and Te Aroha , . assistant relieving officer in the Auckland district, and statiomnaster at Henderson; In 1916 he was taken into the District, Traffic Manager’s office at Auckland. With a year of auditing to liis credit, and experience of control work in all phases of district office duties, lie was fully equipped for appointment as chief clerk to the district manager at Okakune in 1922. In 1924 he was promoted to the position of chief clerk at head office, Wellington, and in the beginning of 1925 was selected as secretary to the newly-created Railways Board of Control. Air. G. 11. Alackley, now assistant general manager, has served in the Railways Department since 1900. He was employed in Southland for seven years and he then became a clerk in ihe Christchurch goods depot. From there he went to Retone, and later to the Invercargill goods department, befouling statiomnaster at Heriot in 1913. He then had live years as statiomnaster at Knikohe and Onerahi in the North Auckland province, and was later promoted to a position ns clerk in the district traffic manager’s office at Wellington, where he remained from 1920 to 1924, being then transferred to Okaliune. He was chief clerk at Ohakune from 1925 to 1925. and was selected in September. 1928, to be chief clerk in the head office at Wellington, a position he Inis continued to occupy until the present time. Air. Alackley has been engaged on special work for the department in connection with the Railway Appeal Board, and also upon staff establishment matCHIEF ENGINEER. Air. E. Casey, promoted to chief en-| gineer, has been well-known in Auckland for several years, for he was selected to supervise the work connected with the new Auckland station yards and the Auckland-Westfield deviation, one of the largest railways jobs in recent years. He was promoted from divisional superintendent at Auckland to be assistant chief engineer! at Wellington last May. He joined the department as a cadet in 1902, and be subsequently served in Wanganui, l Auckland, Greymouth and Ohakune districts. In 1912, Mr. Casey took over duties of assistant engineer, Auckland district, and in 1916 he took charge of] the grade casement works between Penrose and Alercer. In 1921 he was transferred to the Christchurch district, where he was engaged in remodelling the station yards at Alidjaud line prior to the opening of the Otira tunnel. In March, 1925. he was appointed inspecting engineer, with headquarters at Wellington, and he | has occupied the position of vice-chair-man of the Suggestions and Inventions Committee besides acting oil several important departmental committees. Air. Casey is known as a public speaker and debater well above the ordinary, holding an unbeaten record at various competitions in the different centres throughout New Zealand, and fiom 1910 to 1921 he was one of the most prominent officers of the Railways Utficers’ Institute.
