EGMONT COUNTY COUNCIL

.A IONTHLY MEETIN G. At the monthly meeting of the Egmont County Council yesterday at Opunake there were present Crs. AV. C. Green (chairman), J. Young, J. S. !': jsia iul G. Gibson, It. A. Collins, J. T. Shepherd, ancl R. C. Watson. Cr. Lilley was granted leave of absence. The engineer (Mr J. G. Mclvor) reported : Pun elm Hill has been patched and blinded. Deck repairs have been made to Otahi. Waiaua and Waiteika bridges. A fair amount, oi banking and draining have been done and asphalt gritted where needed. Eitham Road: hi: chains of drain have been cleared, shoulders made tip with pit metal and gritting attended to. Sheet Read: The metal portion has been patched and blinded. Iliaia Road : Banking and blinding have been done and Ob chains of drains cleared. Oeo Riding: Nopera Road has been patched and blinded throughout; watertabling and. bliiuling have been done oil Oeo. Pa tiki and Kiri Roads. Opua Riding: Patching has been done on Xamu and Kaweora Roads. A further .‘59 chains has been pitmetalled and rolled on Cpper Kina Road. An old wooden culvert on the Lower Waiteika- Road has been replaced with concrete, pipes and drains cleared. Raliotu Riding: The lower jKirtion of Raliotu Road lias been cleared of -gor.se, drains cleared and culverts lowered. Mirikau and Newall Road contracts are practically completed. trimming only remaining to be done. Forty-five feet qf concrete pipes were made at the depot. The ranger reported seizing, afterwards releasing. 14 cows, three yearlings. seven horses and one bull. The roads were now fairly clear of wandering stock. The Inspector oi' Health reported two cases of pulmonary tuberculosis in the Opua Riding.

NEW ALL ROAD. Some time since a complaint was made by some of the settlers that the road work was not so good as should be the case and a sub-committee was set up to investigate. With the engineer three cutis were made, and the sub-committee now state that in each cut there was ample thickness of material. Tn two of the cuts the material was excellent, but in one not quite so good as might have been desired. The thickness was there. The report, of flip committee was adopted. v DOG REGISTRATION. The ranger, W. Weaver, was appoints tog tax collector, and the tender of Mr AY. N. Brewer, of Ashhurst, for supply of dog collars was accepted, provided lie will put on an extra staple and rivet. BRIDGE WORK. '['lie engineer reported that lie had inspected the bridge over the Lower Waiteika and had found that it was in a very bad state, with trestles rotten, and it was certain that a complete new job must be done. Cr Collins considered a ‘temporary job waste of money, and urged that it should, if possible, be erected in concrete.

The chairman said lie had feared such a position might be reached, and added that if the amount agreed upon were exceeded the rest of the riding would have to go short. In reply to Cr Shepherd, the chairman said that the riding had t-o stand the cost of a bridge unless a loan was raised.

Cr Tosland urged that councillors should inspect the position and then make a decision. On his motion it was agreed that this should be done. GENERAL. Air C. A. Wilkinson, M.P., advised that, in regard to the Government portion of the Puniho Road loan, authority will be issued for the .work to- go ahead so soon as Cabinet approval lias been obtained. The engineer was given leave to attend the annual conference of the New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers. to be held at Wellington in February. The Highways Board advised that the sum of :£1,300. being £3 for £1 subsidy, was available for the Oeo stream deviation and ,£6OO. for Oeo Stream bridge, ,£2 for £l. A copy of the Proclamations taking land for purposes of the deviation was also forwarded Advice was received from the Commissioner of Crown Lands. New Plymouth, that gravel reserves in the county. Sections 125. Block VIII. Cape S.l). and Block V. Opunake, S.D.. were vested in the council.' The Bank of New Zealand advised that the request for a reduction of interest on antecedent liability loan of £12.500. held by the Bank of New Zealand officers guarantee fund, could not be entertained. li was decided that tenders be called for the re-surfacing of the Alain Soiitb Road between AYaiteika and Watinp Roads. The chairman reported that the committee set up to consider the purchase of a new truck, had made a decision to purchase an English machine. The question of grass seed on the sides of the roads was mentioned by Cr. Tosland and he said that, as he was anxious to get some prairie grass seed, he was prepared to offer 30s for the right to cut between Paungatara to the Watino. Oh the motion of the chairman, the offer was acceptled and other offers wen* left in the j hands of the clerk and engineer.
