CHRISTMAS SHOPPING
RETAILERS’ ARRANGEMENTS. LATE CLOSING NIGHTS. At the ordinary monthly meeting of the executive of the Hawera Retailers’ Association yesterday a suggestion was made that a bus should be subsidised to run daily from Kaponga for a week before Christmas to bring passengers without charge to Hawera to do their Christmas shopping. The feeling of the meeting was unfavourable to the proposal, as it was considered unfair to the Kaponga shopkeepers that such a means suould be employed to deprive them of their legitimate trade at such a season. A motion that the matter bo not entertained was therefore carried. ,It was decided to close shops in Hawera on Christmas and Boxing Days and on New Year’s Day and January 2 as usual. Thursday in each week is to be observed as the late night, the shops to remain open until 10 p.m. They are also to remain open on Wednesday afternoon in each week.
The question of special lighting of the town at Christmas time and the possibility of having a Father Christmas for the children was left over for consideration in conjunction with the executive of the Progress League.
