WOMAN YACHT MASTER
FIRST IN NEW ZEALAND. A certificate as a yacht master in New Zealand waters lias been granted to Mrs. A. E. Richmond, of Auckland, who qualified at the Marine Department’s examination in Auckland on Friday. Mrs. Richmond has the honour of being the first woman to gain the certificate in New Zealand, no other woman having sat for the examination. Her yachting experience was obtained in the yacht belonging to her husband, Captain J. W. R. Richmond, of the Tamaki Yacht Club. Besides sailing experience, a qualified yacht master must possess a knowledge of general seamanship, sextant work, the rule of the road, the receiving of signals by morse and semaphore and a knowledge of the international code of signals. The navigation problems to be passed include determining latitude and longitude by the sun and stars, deviation of the compass, the setting of courses to counteract currents,"and various tidal questions. The numerous subjects require considerable study and they were mastered by Airs. Richmond in about six months. Another successful candidate for a yacht master’s certificate was Air. R. Webb, of Northcote.
