FLOOD PREVENTED

WAIMAKARIRI OVERFLOWS

PROTECTIVE BANKS HOLD

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 12. A heavy flood, described as the wrost since 1927, swept down the Waimakariri River yesterday morning, following torrential rain in the watershed at Arthur’s Pass, and inundated all the low-lying farm land on Coutts Island, completely isolating the island from the mainlnad. A tremendous volume of water filled the wide bed of the river near the Waimakariri River "Trust construction camp below Belfast, severely testing the trust’s new protective cub and stop banks. But for these works damage running in to thousands of pounds would have been caused.

The river is again flowing bank-high to-day.
