ASSISTING UNEMPLOYED
CLOTHES DRIVE ON AIONDAY. HOUSE-TO-HOUSE COLLECTION. To alleviate what is stated to be a distressing situation, a' clothes drive in aid of Hawera’s unemployed will be conducted by the Rotary and Savage Clubs on Alonday next. An appeal is made for clothing, boots and shoes of any description, and a house-to-house collection will commence at 7 a.m. For the convenience of the collectors, and to expedite the drive, it is asked that articles be left inside the front gate, or in the event of wet weather in a conspicuous place on the front verandah. It is not desired that the articles should be made into a parcel, but it is specially requested that boots and shoes should be tied together in pairs to avoid confusion.
It was stated at a meeting of representatives of the clubs last evening, over which Mr J. E. Campbell presided, that the majority of the 250 unemployed in the district have been reduced to one pair of shoes or boots and to wearing their “best” clothes to work. Owing to their small earnings the men could not possibly afford to buy new clothing or boots, and the plight of many was really desperate. Clothing, boots and shoes in any reasonable state of repair would be gratefully appreciated, and it was hoped that residents of the town would again respond to a worthy appeal.
