SHAMMING INSENSIBILITY

Albert Johnston, a middle-aged miner, was sentenced at Leeds, England, a few months ago to a month’s imprisonment, having been charged with being found on enclosed premises for an unlawful purpose at night and with assaulting a policeman. A constable said that at 2 a.m. he saw a garage door open, and as lie entered someone attempted to strike him with a tyre lever. He flashed his lamp and saw Johnston, who broke away as he was being taken to the police station. Witness recaptured Johnston and had to hit him with his truncheon. He then handcuffed him and he seemed to be unconscious. Witness took him back to the garage, attended to him and propped him up against the wall, when prisoner seized a half brick and threw it at him, but missed him. There was another struggle, and Johnston seemed again to be unconscious. He laid him on the pavement and went for help, hut when he returned Johnston had gone. Another policeman stated that he found Johnston at home in bed latei, still weaving the handcuffs.^
