AUSTRALIAN TITLES. SEMI-FINALS REACHED. (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph Copyright.) SYDNEY, Sep. 2.' I There was splendid weather to-day for the semi-finalis of the amateur and professional golf championships at Kensington links, Sydney. The boy champions, H. Williams (Victoria) and J. Ferrier (New South Wales), engaged in a gruelling contest. The Victorian triumphed over Ferrier by one up. Ferrier, who defeated Sloan Morpeth yesterday, miss- • ed too many putts and was four down at the end of the morning round. Williams was superb, hitting with great power and confidence, and was much superior in his iron strokes. Ferrier made a great and thrilling recovery. but missed a 3ft putt on the last green which would have squared the match. In the other amateur isemi-final G-. Thompson beat S. Keane, 8 and 7. In the professional semi-finals Spence beat Howard (New South Wales) and Bolger (Xcw South. Wales) beat Cohen (Queensland), 2 up. LADIES’ TOURNEY AT HAWERA. SEMI-FINALS REACHED. The semi-finals stage in the championship and Fairfield handicap events was reached at the South Taranaki ladies’ golf tourney at Hawera yesterday and the concluding rounds will be played to-day. In the championship semi-final Mrs. R, Grace plays Miss Currie and Miss C. G. Robertson plays Mrs. J. Pease. The draw in the handicap event- is: Mrs. Walkley v. Miss E. Burgess j Miss Hurley v. Mrs. Curtis. The starting is in the hands of Mr. H. G. Whitehead, and to him the ladies are much indebted for his valuable assistance. The visiting players were emphatic in their praise of the course, the greens being in exception-1 ullv good order and the general con-] duct of the tourney leaves little to 5 be desired. The results of the first rounds were:
CHAMPIONSHIP. Mrs. R. Grace beat Miss Gibson, 2 and 1. __ Miss Currie beat Mrs. Thomson, 3 Miss Robertson beat Miss Wilson, 0 and 4:. Mrs. Pease beat Mrs. Gilbert, 2 and 1 Miss Robertson was playing very well and returned a card of 81 gross. FAIRFIELD HANDICAP. First Round. Mrs. Walkley beat Mrs. Casey, 7 al Miss Burgess beat Miss Pease, 6 and 4 ' Miss Hurley beat Mrs. Davy, 2 and 1 Mrs. Curtis beat Mrs. Boon, 7 and The semi-finals were to'be played m the morning and the finals this afternoon after which the presentation of trophies would be made In a bogey handicap Mis.
