DEMPSEY SEEKING DIVORCE

Jack Dempsey lias filed a divorce suit at Reno, Nevada, charging extreme mental cruelty against hiis wife. Several weeks of fruitless negotiation with his wife’s attorneys regarding a. propertv settlement preceded the filing of the' suit. The wife at Hollywood announced that she intended to contest th© action. Meanwhile she plans to start a divorce suit against Dempsev at Los Angeles.
A message from Reno on April 13 said: “Jack Dempsey has confirmed the rumours that his next fight, will he in the divorce court versus his actress wife, Estelle Tavlor. “We had a little trouble,” he said. “I thought if I pretended to ask for a divorce it would brine her round, but Estelle apparently wants to get rid of me. so I am trying to please her, although I do not want a. divorce.” Deinpsev said he gave up the ring because lie wanted home life instead of the heavyweight title, but his wife refused to drop her cinema career and was ambitious to establish herself as an opera singer. , . A message from Hollywood Mated that Estelle was reported' to have retired. and with friends was planning to fight to the last ditch. Th© actress manager told reporters, “If she talks here and Dempsey talks at Reno there will bo a terrible mess.” Friends confirmed that the couple bad often quarrelled, but one stated: “Jack always brought round peace offerings after the battle.”
