UNDER 15 FEET OF SILT BURIED FOR SEVEN HOURS COMRADE’S GALLANT RESCUE (United Press Association —Ey Electric Telegraph Copyright.) Received 2.15 p.m. to-dav. LONDON, June 19. An unusual drama, was enacted on the bed of the Thames at Dagenham, where a. jetty is being constructed. For seven hours a diver was imprisoned beneath 15 feet of mud with the liielines passing the jagged edges of a steel cylinder weighing 100 tons, which was being sunk in mud to provide the foundations. The diver descended to ascertain what was preventing the cylinder from sinking and shortly afterwards a sharp tag was given the diver’s safety rope a.ndi those above realised that the diver had been sucked down and buried in the mud. Other divers descended and worked continuously to locate their comrade, who, after seven hours, was released and brought to the surface still conscious. His face was. swollen and red. He explained that his greatest trouble was the pressure of mud on his body.
