i | SOLAR. ECLIPSE. LECTURE BY MR,. F. G A WITH. (From Our Own Correspondent.) On Tuesday evening of last week an (interesting lantern lecture in aid of | the Methodist foreign missions was | given in the local hall by Mr. F. Gawith, of E-ltham, the subject being the recent solar eclipse and experiences of the astronomical parties on the island of Niu-a-foou. There was a very good attendance and the mission funds will materially benefit as a result of the entertainment. Rev. Coatswortli, of Eltham, accompanied Mr. Gawith and acted as lantern operator. During the evening several vocal items were rendered by Rev. Nelson and Messrs AY. E. Hey and E. Chapman. The Rev. Nelson presided and at the conclusion thanked Mr. Gawith for his interesting talk and all present for their attendance. EUCHRE SOCIAL. The usual weekly euchre party was held on Tuesday and again drew a good attendance. Keen interest was taken and the winners for the evening eventually proved to be Miss Doris Allan, after a play-off with Mrs. Rothe, who annexed the ladies’ prize, a set of jugs, and Mr. A. P. Gargan, who won the men’s prize, a pocket wallet. There were again good entries for the ping-pong tournament, which was won by Master G. Kenyon, after a keen final with Mr. J. Gibson. SCHOOL FOOTBALL. j On Saturday last the RiverleaI Awatuna school football team journeyed 'to Manaia to play Manaia Convent and suffered defeat by 19 (two converted tries and three tries) to 3 one try). This was the first defeat the team had suffered in the field. They were a weak team on the day and also seemed to have an off-day. Four of the members, of the team — P. Davy (Awatuna) (five-eighth), H. Gargan (half), AV. McLeod (hooker) and R. youllaire (lock)—have been chosen to play in the primary schools divisional representative trials at Eltham on Saturday. ___
