WORK AVAILABLE.

(lo the Editor.) Sir —For some weeks past appeals have’been made for those who could “o-ive” or “make” work for the unemployed in our midst to do so ana quicklv. Now, sir, we find this work is not forthcoming as was expected by those in authority, and Scheme o has fallen through, too. Now I believe it tlio members of the Unemployment Committee were to spend tlie whole ol next Sunday on a walking tour of •.lntown they would lie surprised to sec tlie numbers of selfish, thoughtless creatures who live (here. They will .see carpentering, painting, gardening, lawn mowing, hedge clipping, etc., etc. (and lots besides they could not see) all being executed by those who could well afford to. help their more unfortunate brothers, and in so doing keep their self-respect. Why, it 1S n °t 50 many weeks ago since I sa, F, , j “licensed carrier” shifting a household (not some poor soul from ‘ Poverty Lane” being evicted for non-payment of rent either) on the Sabbath Day, and I was not so concerned as to where the police were as to where the iinemployed were. Methinks a tolly of our main roads alone on a _ Sabbath would show many trucks 'being used for business which should lie executed in the working week. There appears to be one law for the Chinaman and one for the white man in the matter of working on the Sabhatli. I ask the Unemployment Coommittee to consider this suggestion and perhaps _ one of their number would publish his observations in your worthy journal, so that all may know the self-respecting citizens in our midst who are honestly out- to assist the unemployed. Thanking vou Mr Editor.—l am, a toy NON-HYPOCRITE. P.g.—On second thoughts it. might be better if tlie Sunday of their visit were kept secret.—N.H.
