WORK IN SOUTH. TARANAKI. ROOT GROWING CONTESTS. The whole of the Sauth Taranaki judging of the root crop plots of the children in the schools in South and Central Taranaki have been judged, the work being finalised on Thursday by Messrs. J. W. Palmer and Rod Syrne.
They stated that a feature has been the entry of more carrots than mangolds for the first time since the comfpetiitfionis started. The average in the former is far above that of previous years .but in mangolds, with some exceptions, the results have not been so good. A crop of carrots weighed on Thursday at Huinga, 81 toils 19owt, a. red variety, was the highest ever weighed in the competitions, the nearest being that of Norman Southern (R.iverlea) 81 tons 12c.wit and Dan Malone (Kaponga Convent) 68 tons 9 cwt. The highest in whites was a crop of about. 73 tons at Tokoara, 7 years ago.
The judges were entertained at Rawhitiroa, bv Mrs. Wood, at Mahoe by Mrs. Relf, Te Pope by Mrs. Hoby and Huinga by Mrs. Cook,
Results were as follows, the weights being as before, in carrots —Gerrande and Matchless white and in mangolds. Prize| winner and| Wbrite Sugar with maximum of 40 to 10 for cultivation and quality: MAHOE. Carrots.
