TIMBER FROM RUSSIA
SHIPMENT AT SYDNEY. PROTESTS FROM MERCHANTS. United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph Copvright.) SYDNEY, June 18. A storm of protest lias arisen in regard to the arrival of a huge shipment of timber form a Russian, port, the Sydney portion of which was sold before the arrival of the ship.
The hill of lading discloses. 380,000 superficial feet of cedar, which if intended for furniture manufacture will compete with Queensland maple and silky oak and if for (boxwood will compete with New Zealand pine. The shipment is regarded by merchants as a feeler to test the Australian market. The Timber Merchants’ Association has appealed to the Government to “arrest the dumping of Soviet slaveproduced timber” on the ground that locally milled timber is unable to compete with it. The Federal authorities are now making inquiries.
