HAWERA COUNTY RATES

REDUCTIONS MADE

At Saturday’s meeting of the Hawera County Council the question of rates was considered and after some discussion it was resolved to reduce the ridiug rates as follow: Hawera, to lid; Mokoia, to lid; Ararata, to Id. This will mean a reduction of Id, id and gd respectively. The chairman (Cr. .7. B. Murdoch) in referring to the question said that, in view of the financial position, the county being £SOOO better off than last year at this time, the council felt justified in making these reductions. “Our main endeavour,” he added, “is to keep the roads in good order as at present. There is a lesser amount to pay for hospital levy and a considerable saving can be effected during the coming year. We should, therefore, reduce the rates considerably. There would be a saving of £I3OO in bitumen supplies, and no lorry to buy or metal 'dump to be established. I am satisfied that with careful management, and with the help of the engineer and staff, the savings can be made.” fl The riding members agreed that reductions in rates could be made. In conclusion the chairman urged that all requests from ratepayers for work would have to be considered very carefully. All work would have to be carried out at as low a cost as possible, and in this way the council could, lie felt sure, come out well ahead at the end of the year.
