MADEIRA REVOLT ENDED
SURRENDER AT FUNCHAL.
WARSHIP BREAKS MORALE

The Madeira revolt has ended. The Ministry announces that Funchal was handed over to the Government today.
A later message states that rebel leaders took refuge in the British Consulate. The warship Vasco do Gama’s bombardment, though it broke the rebel morale, caused no casualties.
Marinos and bluejackets were landed to protect British lives and property. L Foreign residents and visitors were not harmed, and civilians were not injured. Government troops struggled inland, impeded by the hilly country. The rebels’ short-range guns were unable to reply to the marine bombardment. The Government recovered two steamers from the rebels The Vasca da Gama fired two shots, one smashing the registrar’s house a mile from the hotel where the British residents were accommodated, narrowly missing adjacent buildings containing 15 children. Aeroplanes flew over the eitv indicating that the bishop’s peace efforts had failed. An earlier message stated that the rebel leaders claimed to have repulsed the bombardments and attacks in four places. Transports were unable to approach the island owing to artillery lire from the shore. Some of the Government foreos were wounded and a destroyer was towed to the base.
