After a series of steady matches in which he showed, consistent good play ( A. S. Hassell, of New Plymouth, won the championship in the golf tourney iait New Plymouth yesterday, beating E. L. Abbott, of the Elth-am Club, in the final by the narrow margin of 2 up. ■ Hasell has been one of the most enthusiastic members of the Golf Club iii New Plymouth and his success is well deserved. R Wills of Hawera, won the Ngamotii Handicap,, beating Russell in the final fairly easily. _ The semi-finals provided two hard battles, Hlasell winning from Chong 2 up and Abbott prevailing over Martland only at the 19th. In the former match Hasoll set up a. good lead at the .opening and held it throughout. Hasell wasi two up. at the ninth and again at the 12th. Playing badly h.t the 14tli Chong lost and Hasell was donny three. Chong won the 17 th and halved the next, thus losing 2 down. Mortland led Abbott throughout, g el ting a, lead of one early and holding it to the 12th. Abbott then had a lapse arid Mortland was two up. at the 14th. Abbott, however, recovered, and squared the match at the 18th. They went to the 19th and Abbott won in a nice four - .

Dr. Walker, lie said, had been proriiinerit iii tlie formation of the club many years ago, and although no longer a playing member he took a keen interest in the club’s welfare.

Dr. AValker deified .the honour of establishing the golf club in New Plymouth, which he believed rested with Messrs Reg. Bayly and AA r . E. Spencer. He congratulated the club on the excellent course and the continued high standard of play at the Easter tournament.
