OPOTIKI RACES OFF
TRACK DEEMED DANGEROUS. (Ily Telegraph—Press Association.) OPOTIKI, March 26. The Opotiki races were postponed owing to inclement weather. Riders were of the opinion that the track was .dangerous, _____ believed""HTflat"rate~’of reduction was the fairest way. Several Labour members contended that there would he no benefit to the Consolidated Fund as a result of..reducing salaries of the Post and Telegraph Department, as the revenue from that department went into a senarate fund and did not assist in balancing the National Budget. The lion. R. Atinore, who was temporarily in charge of the Bill. exnlained that legislation would be introduced in a second Bill to enable the Consolidated Fund to get the benefit of the P. and T. salary reductions.
The .Labour .Party’s early morning division of speakers returned to the chamber about middav and carried on the debate on Mr O’Brien’s amendment. till the adjournment of the House at 1 p.m.
