LIVELY MAN HUNT

NIGHT CHASE IN CITY. POLICE ELUDED. The (subsequent actions of two men who, late on Monday night, wore surprised in Bouse, Black and Sons, motorbody builders, Lloyd Street, by a policeman, were the cause of some excitement among the people living in the vicinity. The men escaped after an exciting clmse reports the “Dominion.” Shortly before midnight a policeman on beat duty saw two men in Bouse Black’s within six feet of liim. The men turned and ran to the back of the building one of them placing liis hands over his face so that he would not he recognised. Before the policeman could get to the back of the premises, which are hedged round by houses the men made their exit through the skylight; they raced along the roof,' and dropped down into a neighbouring backyard. Here they separated, racing, however, over backyard fences in the direction of Brougham Street. They were seen at this stage and a hue and cry was raised. Dogs ba'rked loud and long, windows were raised, and one lady telephoned the police station. A few minutes later si motor car containing 'policemen came post haste to Brougham Street, while other policemen instituted a. search from the Lloyd Street side.

Presently torches were flashing all over the place, policemen clambered noisily over fences, and every person on whom a beam fell was challenged. Every nook and cranny was thoroughly searched, but the quarry had fled. There could he no doubt as to the way they had gone. A gate in Brougham Street, invariably kept locked, was found to have been torn open. The liuuted men must have gone out of the gate but a. few minutes before a nextdoor neighbour came in through his own front gate and the arrival of the police.
