Grave communal rioting occurred in Cawnpore yesterday and to-day, following the Lahore executions. Twenty persons were killed and 120 injured. The rioters set fire to and looted shops. The Cawnpore unit of British troops was called out at midnight and was followed some hours later by the auxiliary forces. Temples have been looted and 14 incendiary fires occupied the brigades’ attention. Attacks were made upon the Currency Office, the. courts and the telegraph station. The trouble started when Moslems refused to participate in mourning for the executed men. Gangs of ruffians of both communities took advantage of the .situation to create a reign of ter ror, indulging in burnings and lootings. Disturbance also recurred in Peshawar. where the demonstrators wrecked a liquor shop.

The first symptoms of possible trouble in the Congress open sessions at Karachi was apparent in a meeting of the Young Men’s Association called as an act of homage to the three executed terrorists. A furious attack on Gandhi was made by the Moslem president of the association and Moslem president of the association and Moslem and iSikh extremists who found a sympathetic hearing. There were disorderly scenes in the city of Karachi to-day when an English chaplain was stoned.
