EARTHQUAKE RELIEF FUND
•SATISFACTORY OPERATION. PRIME MINISTER’S ASSURANCE. (Bj Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, March 25. A denial that relief funds had been used to reimburse the railway or other departments for expenses incurred after the earthquake was made by the Prime Minister to-day. Mr Forbes said the fund was operating satisfactorily as far as he was aware, and no trouble had been, caused in disbursements through the various committees in the affected area. These committees were the ones actually handing out the funds after they had gone through the hands of the Public Trustee. The Prime Minister has decided that the accounts recording the relief transactions of all institutions, locfi'l bodies other organisations and private persons receiving and disbursing relief funds Avill be audited by the Government audit office. The authority necessary to enable this to be done is being provided in the emergency' earthquake legislation to be presented at the present session of Parliament. ‘The central relief committee has decided that in future the question of investigating individual applications for relief in the nature of food and clothing will be dealt with by the hospital and charitable aid boards. A refund will be made to the hospital and charitable aid boards of the cost of all relief granted persons in need as a result of the earthquake. LONDON SUBSCRIPTIONS.
