The sum of £70,000 has been, assessed by an international! commission against the Canadian Pacific Railways, as owners of a consolidated smelter located in the town, on a trial for damage by sulphur fumes in the State of Washing. The damages in this unique case cover ten years. The smelter operates 20 miles from the international iboundary, but the fumes drift southward into the United States and fill farm valleys, killing vegetation over an area of 40 square miles.
By erecting a huge £2,000,000 fertiliser plant the smelter company will hereafter turn the fumes into a profitable channel.
