RAILWAY RENTS RISE
INCREASE UP TO 300 PER, CENT. RESULT OF INQUIRY. (By Telegrapu —Press Association.) DUNEDIN, March 5. Very heavy increases in the ‘rentals of houses leased to railway servants by the Railway Department have been brought under notice iby the member of Parliament for Port Chalmers, Air A. E. Ansell. The increases in some eases) amount to as much as 300 per cent. • . . Instances of increases which came into force on February 1 are as follows, the new rental 'being shown m parentheses : 7s 6d (22. s 6d), 15s (33s 9d), 15 S (44s Od), 8s 6d (24s 6d), 6s 6d (19s), 9s 6d (28s 8d), 10s 6d (24s 8d) Mr Ansell communicated with tne Alinister, Hon. W. A. Veitch, on the subject and received a reply stating that the increases were imposed a® a result of the Royal Commissions recommendations and after very close investigation. It was not considered tne men'were being harshly dealt with. _ Mr Ansell adds he intends to voice a protest in the House of Representatives.
