OTAKEHO CATTLE SHOW

DISTRICT STOCK. DISPLAYED TENTH ANNUAL FIXTURE. The tenth annual show of cattle and horses, held yesterday under the auspices of the Otakeho District I aimers Association, fully maintained the high reputation made by the association in previous years. lii was licddi in Mr El. Andrews’ .paddock on tlie Auroa Road and was attended both morning and afternoon by a large crowd of interested spectators from all round the district and from Hawera, Manaia and Kaiponga. Excellent arrangements were made by the committee led fey the president (Mr E T. Bourke) and the lion, secretary (Mr 11. R. Wood). Special mention is duo to the very effective method of showing first the events and then 1 the detailed results on three blackboards. It was very much appreciated. The judges were Messrs H. F. Wren for the 'cat-tie and J. W. Burke for the horses and both did their work well. The list of stewards was as follow: Gates, Mr R. Franklin; road, Mr L. ! Cuthibert; cars, Mr J. McAdams; sheep Mr A. Baylis; horses, Mr A. Ha-stie; children. Messrs J. Lander and J. D. Rash ford; milch cows, Mr El. Horgan; cattle. Messrs J. El. Young, E. R. Putt, C. A. Burke, A. C. Walker, E. llenwood, 11. George, H. Corkill. S. Lo Fleming, H. Bayliss. A ladies’ committee consisting of Mbs da mes B. T. Burke. Putt, Corkill, Walker, Bavliss, S. Le Fleming, Wood, C'. A. Burke, and Campbell and the Misses Putt, Burke (8), Blackstock, .and ITurlev gave excellent service in iprovidin'! luncheon and afternoon tea. The results in the various events CHAMPIONSHIPS Dairy bull.—Jas. Nicolson champion - and reserve. Dairv cow.—W. P. Herbert champion, E. T. Burke reseawe. Points prize (Hawera Jersey Club Cup).—Jas. Nioolson (30 points). general awards. Aged bulls.—J. Nicolson 1, O A. Burke 2. The winner, said the judge, i showed much more vitality and was a nice “sappy" animail. It had great carriage, good head and great depth df (body 'Altogether a fine specimen of a. bull, showing type and ability to leave good stock. The other bull was, also a good animal, but was beaten by, the first- in general conformation, depth of body and in character. Two and a-half year bulls. —J. Nicolson 1 and 3, E. R, Putt 2. The winner lias, .said the judge, a, nice head, with broad muzzle and deep body, and carried out well with a good tail settin o-. The second was somewhat coarse in comparison, but the class geneially was good. IS months bull.—-J. Nicolson 1, R. J. Byrne 2, E. Horgan 3. . Bull calf.—R. J. Byrne 1, B. Rushin 2, E. Horgan 3. Pedigree IS months lieifor. —J. iSjcoisoil L," 2 and 3. The first, said Mr Wren, was a- very nice tyipy animal and was outstanding.' The second and third were also good specimens of the breed, hut not quite up to the winner. Grade 18 months heifer.—Maurice Burke I, A. Hlastie 2, R. J. Byrne 3, Man lice Burke v.h.c. There were 15 entries.

Twelve entries; a very nice collection of useful animals. The two first were excellent specimens of productive cows. Two and a-hatf year heifer in milk. —-J. Nicolson 1, E. R. Putt 2, A. Ha-stie 3. The winner was a good type of heifer and with' quality all over, beating the second in back line and to some extent in udder conformation. Three and a-half year heifer in milk. —R. E. Davison 1, J. Nicolson 2, M. Burke 3. Eix entries. A nice let of animals, showing much productive ability. Children’s heifer calf. —John Burke I, L. Ni oh oils 2, G. Taylor 3. Utility horses.—Up to loowt: It. E. Davison 1. R. J. Byrne 2. Up to 17 cwt: R, E. Davison 1, E. Horgan 2, S. H. Le Fleming 3. The judge, Mr J. W. Burke, said lie was very pleased with the general standard of the horses shown and considered the winner of the heavy class an exceptionally nice mare. At the conclusion the president expressed thanks to the judges for their good work and generous help, giving fearless decisions throughout. Theassociation, he said, had for ten year's held shows to demonstrate what cattle were being reared and used in the district. He said the committee was a little disappointed that there was not a larger crowd present for it was a movement that should be of great value to the district and should be st-ro ng 1 v s upp ort e cl. Mr Wren said it- was always, a pleasure' to come out to Otakeho- and to try to help the show. The display was a credit "to all concerned. It was purely an amateur show, the cattle being shown in the condition on which they were seen on the- farm and ho would( congratulate exhibitors on their work. ITo considered this whole movement was a credit to the association.
