COLLIER CATCHES FIRE
BLAZE EXTINGUISHED PROMPTLY. (By Telegraph-Press" Association.-) WELLINGTON, March. 3, Damage was done by a fire which broke out in the engine-room locker of the Union 'Company’s collier Kaimnias ir lay berthed at the Railway wharf early to-night. The outbreak was discovered by (lie watchman on board before it. had made much headway and the alarm which lie gave brought the Central Fire Brigade to the ship’s side within two minutes.
The engine-room is amidships ami leading from it on the starboard side aft is a locker for waste and other eti-gine-rooxn stores. The tire had prtobably been smouldering for some time. The Harbour Board watchman on the wharf had a hose connected ready for use by the time the brigade arrived but the blaze, which was just beginning to flare up, was put out with a patent extinguisher and a few buckets of water.
The Kaimai is a collier of 1428 tons. 'She reached Wellington late on Saturday evening from Greymouth, the vessel laying up on completion of discharge. The crew was paid off on Aloud ay.
