FILLING WAR TRENCHES
BIG TASK IN CHINA With the termination of .the seveiinionths civil war, the major problem of the villages around Kaifeng and Lanf eng, two strategic cities m . tins province, is the filling up of the 140 miles of trenches that were dug by troops of the Nanking Government and the rebel army (states a “Christian Science Monitor” message from Kaifello*) . It is estimated that 22,000 dollars will bo needed for this work alone. About half of the farmers and noncombatants in the war zone, who fled when war broke out, have returned to their homes. The crops have been totally destroyed. Foodstuff is scarce and the people are eating the coarsest kind of milldt.
