PENALTY OF CRIME
SENTENCES AT GISBORNE,
(By Telegraph—Press Association i GISBORNE, Feb. 26. In the Supreme Court Clifford Drum- ' mond was sentenced to nine months imprisonment for the theft of a motor<y Sydney Christie was sentenced to three months’ gaol for carnal knowledge. Wilfred Llyod Butter ill was sentenced to two years’ Borstal treatment Lawrence Brown to six months * gaol, Keith Gaffey to six months’ gaol, and John Belmont and Ruku Tangera to 18 months” imprisonment, all tor breaking, entering and theft. When called for sentence it was found that John Joseph Plasto, who had pleaded guilty to a false declaration of marriage, was absent. lhe Crown Prosecutor explained that accused had gone to Invercargill and could not get back. lhe Judge ordered that accused be arrested and sent to Dunedin for sentence. Reggie Beach, who pleaded guilty to forgery, was ordered to make restitution and come up for sentence when called upon.
. DUNEDIN PRISONERS. DUNEDIN, Feb. 26. In the Supreme Court, alter Pulsford Warren, aged 53, and Joseph Perkins, aged 35, were sentenced on 13 charges of breaking, entering and theft in various parts of Otago. Ike former was sentenced to 18 months and the latter to 12 months, both with hard labour. The Crown Prosecutor said the prisoners might be new to crime, bdut they had graduated quickly and engaged in a systematic course of burglary which was made difficult to detect. Alexander Patrick Fodie, aged 19, for breaking, entering and theft, was sentenced to 18 months’ Borstal treatment. The prisoner, a country boy, got fond of dress and got into debt. He burgled his employer’s house.
