LONDON PRESS COMMENT
LONDON, Feb. 23. Mr. J, T. Lang’s policy speech lias been extensively featured in England. The Morning Post’s financial editor savs it looks as. though the. situation is fast working np to a political crisis. It woud appear there would be repudiation. of at least some portion, of the New South Wales interest. “Every line of the extravagant speech is to be deprecated, every line is unfortunately calculated to impair the credit of New South Wales, ’ the paper continues. “It must be remembered. however, that, the Commonwealth is responsible for the State as well ais the Federal loans and thus there is little doubt that the Commonwealth will see that no pains are spared to carry out to the utmost the obligations of both States and Commonwealth.” ... The Daily Telegraph’s city editor pays little attention to Mr. Lapg s latest outburst, regards him as the mad dog of Australian politics, and refuses toTbe influenced by bis wildest rhetorical excesses. , Most.- Australian stocks have advanced bv 20s to 60s while New South Wales sixes have advanced £o. it is believed that the conference of bankers of the Federal Ministry now sitting at. Melbourne will result m some amicable settlement which will restore British investors’ confidence and preserve Australia’s credit.
