The British Government is shortly announcing a loan of £172,000 to Nadir lvhan, King of Afghanistan; also a gitt of 10,(M) modem rilles and 5,000,000 rounds, of small arm ammunition. it is in response to Sir Austen Chamberlain’s undertaking m the House of Commons on January 30, 192-9, when he said that if a strong central Government were established, Britain was prepared to accord all possible assistance in the reconstruction of the country. This iis important not only to trade but, sinoe the same tribes occupy both sides, one cannot be disturbed without extension of the trouble. The gesture is not anti-Russian nor' associated with personal relationship with Nadir Khan. The promise was actually made before his succession to the throne.
