EARTHQUAKE RELIEF
PTH AM A ANNUAL BALL. A STRIKING SUCCESS. Never lias the Pihaina Hall looked prettier or gayer than it did last night for the occasion of the second annual ; harvest home ball, held this year on behalf of the earthquake relief fund. An energetic committee had been ‘hard at work making arrangements and, I helped by several ladies, they had carried out a colour scheme of decorations j that was most effective in yellow and [green. It was set off most effectively : by strings of multi-coloured lights, kindly lent by Messrs Mac Ewan and Co. and fixed’ by the Opunake Power Board officers. The result, set off by the gay * dresses of the ladies on the floor, was a really brilliant effect. The haJi was crowded to its utmost capacity and a thoroughly good time spent Dy all. There were visitors from Opunake, Haw era, Mauaia and other places surrounding Pihaina, making the largest crowd ever seen in the liall. Dancing was enjoyed to excellent music by Henderson 's Star Orchestra of Opunake, and this was much appreciated by all dancers., Several extras were played and a Monte Carlo waltz was Avon by Miss L. Putt and Mr L. Bolter.
The committee of management AA'as as follows: Messrs ,T. S. Tosland (chairman), W. A. Sheat, Arthur and Alex ■ McHannigau, D. Pollock, A. Clarke, R. W. Hunter, and the M.’sC. were Messrs A. He said it had been intended to make the ball the annual : event as usual for the district, but, in A'ieAv of the urgent need l for help to the earthquake sufferers, the committee resorted to deA'Ote the proceeds to the fund. He specially thanked the ladies’ committee for their excellent supper arrangements, the committee of management and the energetic hon., secretary (Mr R. W. Haseltine), Messrs J. B. MacEAA’an and Co., and the Power Board for generous help, and the large attendance of viistors from many parts for their patronage., This concluded one of the most successful functions ever held in Pihama, and it will help materially to swell the relief fund.
