LOCAL AND GENERAL

Lady Baden-Rowell will deliver a broadcast talk to Girl Guides from IYA Auckland to-night. The third race for the Sanders Oup at Dunedin yesterday was declared off as none of the boats finished within the time limit. Avalon had a big lead, and another five minutes would have sufficed for her to complete the course. The wind was very light and variable, and at times there was a flat calm. Two races will be sailed to-day if necessary.

In conversation with a “Hawera Star” reporter this morning the Hawera borough engineer (Mr J. Sturrock) intimated that slight changes in the condition of the water received through the supply system may be noted for a few days as the result of cleaning operations at present in progress throughout the mains, but oil completion of the work the service should again prove satisfactory.

With a few returns of ticket sales yet to come in it is expected that approximately £l2 will be realised from the dance held in aid of the earthquake relief fund at Hawera on Wednesday evening under the auspices of the Oliawe Troop, Legion of Frontiersmen. The committee wishes to acknowledge with thanks the generous public response which was responsible for the excellent result of the effort and also to thank Monsignor Cullen, whose courtesy in arranging for the use of St. Joseph’s Hall free of charge was an important factor in the reduction of expenses to a minimum.

Many queer finds have been made by English grocers when cutting up New Zealand cheese, but the astonishment of one when he discovered a large-sized scrubbing brush recently may well be imagined. The cheese was consigned from a well-known Taranaki factory, and a photograph of the cheese, showing the brush deeply embedded in the centre, was sent to the factory by the Tooley Street agents through whom it was consigned. After the full period of retirement the jury was unable to come to an agreement last evening in the case in the Supreme Court at Wellington against Laory and Co., Ltd., fruit auctioneers, Wellington, charged on five counts with failing to disclose pecuniary interest in a contract and on one count of rendering false sales accounts to the Department of External Affairs in connection with the disposal of Samoan bananas. A new trial for the May session of the court was ordered. The Chief Justice presided.
