ARREST MADE IN SYDNEY
FALSE' PRETENCES CHARGE (My Telegraph—Pres* Atwociation.) AUCKLAND, Feb. 18. On the arrival at Sydney yesterday of the inter-colonial steamer Marama from New Zealand detectives went on hoard and arrested Ed ward Louis Schneider, aged 36, on a. charge of false pretences at Auckland. The warrant- upon which Schneider was arrested was. issued !>v the Auckland police. The charge was that on December 1.2, at Auckland, with intent, to defraud, lie obtained from James O’Neill Hewitt £lO6 by falsely representing that he had a, large business and was making huge profits. Schneider appeared later at the Police Court in Sydney and was remanded till February 2G pending the arrival of an escort from New Zealand. On Friday a Wellington constable will leave for Sydney with the original warrant, and he will ask that Schneider he extradictcd to Auckland. This morning the Auckland police stated they had received 18 complaints from persons who alleged they had been defrauded of sums ranging from £6O to
C 250 by Schneider. The total amount y involved is alleged to be over £IIXIO. Schneider is an Australian who recent! v spent four or five* months in Auckland.
