The conference was to have been held at Rotorua in March. The council was also advised that the conference of the New Zealand Libraries Association, whicli was to have been held at TSmaru on February 18 and 19, had been postponed owing to the earthquake.

The Onristeliureh City Council decided by a majority of one to reduce the salaries of its the new scale to operate on April 1. The following recommendation of the finance committee was agreed' to: That as the economic conditions of the Dominion call for material reductions in the costs of government, a reduction of salaries be made to operate as from April 1, 1931, and that whore the council is paying wages and allowances in excess of award rates that award rate be reverted to as from April 1, 1931.

The device erected at the Hawera municipal baths this season to the design of the custodian, Mr J. Dowdle, has proved a valuable aid to many learners in swimming. It was used for the first time on January 7 and has proved a highly popular innovation. Up till Saturday a total of 52 pupils, principally juveniles, had been advanced through practice witli the device to the stage of being able to cross the baths unaided after, in most cases ,only a few days of practice. Inquiries concerningthe device, have been received from various parts of the North Island., and as a result of a recent inspection similar equipment has been obtained on request by Mr Dowdle and was despatched yesterday to the Okato baths.

Tills evening in the Okaiawa Hall there will be a grand euchre party and dance in aid of the earthquake fund. A strong committee, under the general direction of Mr A. G. Robertson, lion, secretary, lias made the arrangements and the function promises to be a huge success.
