The weather is fine and the wind light and westerly. The sea was heavy overnight, subsiding as rapidly as usual this morning. An alarm at 4.51) a.in. awoke the whole town, with one of the worst shocks since the commencement. It was prolonged; otherwise the night was quiet. Food tickets are now necessary, the supplies being strictly limited. Only those with an order from their employers are being supplied. The police control has reached such perfection that every house in the town is visited several times each night by special constables in pairs. The staff of McGruer’s, Ltd., are requested to report to the manager’s address immediately. There were no further shocks up till noon. It is announced that all fit Napier men should return, but women will not be invited until water and sewerage connections are completed. Excellent work has already been done and many areas are now supplied with both these services. Gas will be available in six weeks. The relief committee will rebuild one chimney in each house. The streets have been cleared sufficiently for all necessary purposes. Water and sewerage connections are being made free 1 , but fires in bouses will not be permitted.

Scoops and teams are urgently wanted and offers should be sent to the relief committee.

CLEARING WOOL STORES SHIPPING COMPANY’S ACTION GISBORNE, Feb. 12. Advice has been received that the shipping companies, in order to assist the clearing of the wo-oL stores at Napier, which will he sent to London as speedily as possible, will accept single bales as dumped lots. EARTHQUAKE SUFFERERS WAIMATE WEST HELP. In moving a vote of sincere sympathy with the sufferers in the earthquake at the Waimate West County Council meeting to-day, the chairman (Cr E. Long) said it was not necessary for him to enlarge on fho awful happenings of a week ago. It was agreed that the clerk send ■a telegram, expressing sympathy, to the Mayors of Napier, Hastings and Wairoa. Councillors stood a few moments in silence as a mark of respect. It was decided that the council donate the sum of £SO towards the fund. The chairman remarked that it was a case where, “the strong should help the weak.”
